“When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.” (Genesis 9:14–15, ESV)

Note the form of the promise. God does not say, “And when you look at the bow, and you remember my covenant that is between me and you, then I will not destroy the earth.”

Rather, the promise is grounded, not upon our memory, which is fickle and frail, but upon God’s memory, which is infinite and immutable. “…and when the bow is seen in the cloud, I will remember my everlasting covenant.” It is so sweet to know that it is not our remembering God, but rather, it is God’s remembering us which is the ground of our safety; it is not my laying hold of His covenant, but His covenant laying hold on me. Glory to God!
