Over the years, some have suggested that Christ died primarily as an example for us, to inspire us to greater love for God. Others have suggested that Christ’s death was merely a demonstration of God’s hatred for sin. Still others have said it was primarily a demonstration of his compassion and identification with sinners. Today, we are starting to see yet another new twist on the Gospel: the notion that Christ died in order to take away our shame, and our feelings of insecurity and embarrassment. In order to understand what Christ is doing for us on the cross, we need to wrestle with this little phrase in Romans 3:25, "...Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood..."
